MFE, MAE and left on the table

What the excursion numbers mean, and how much of each move your exits keep.

MFE is the furthest a trade moved in your favour; MAE is the furthest it moved against you. Both are recorded in the review in R, alongside what you realised.

Left on the table is the distance between a trade's MFE and its realised R. It's the part of the move your entry earned and your exit didn't keep.

A worked example

A trade runs to 3.1R at its best and dips 0.4R against you early on. You exit at 1.4R. MFE is 3.1R, MAE is 0.4R, and 1.7R was left on the table.

What the averages show

  • Average MFE against average realised R, which shows how much of the available move your exits keep
  • Average MAE, which shows how far trades typically move against you before they work
  • Left on the table per trade and on average, so a single give-back can't set the story

Every exit rule leaves something on the table on some trades, and that alone isn't a flaw. A high MFE next to a small realised R still means your entries are finding real moves.
