Unresolved trades

Why some trades sit out of a backtest, and why they are never guessed at.

An unresolved trade is one your journal cannot settle under a rule. It is counted, printed next to the rule it belongs to, and left out of that rule's average.

The three reasons

  • Your stop and your target both traded, and the journal keeps the two extremes but not the order they came in
  • Price came back through your entry, and nothing on file says whether that was before or after the high
  • The best and worst prices were never filled in on the review

Guessing any of these would flatter whichever rule got the guess. Counting them in the open is the honest alternative, and it is why two rules on the same study can show different trade counts.

A rule that could only price under half the study is not ranked against the rest at all. A rule that skips every hard trade looks best by skipping them, so the comparison refuses it rather than printing it.

Backtesting over historical price bars, which is building now, settles these trades by walking the bars from that day in order.
